SEO Copywriting Tips

Learning how to write copy for the search engines, or SEO copywriting, is really about learning how to write web content both for the reader and for the search engines. Often this is referred to as “search engine copywriting” or SEO copywriting. So why do we use SEO copywriting? It’s to rank high for your chosen keywords and then convert the traffic by offering the visitors valuable content. Many people confuse this for some kind of a technical method to manipulate the search engines. SEO copywriting is a way of creating a win-win situation; the art of creating quality content which provides the best value for the reader, who is able to find your content becuase it is optimized for the search engines and thus easy to find.

It Pays To Be Honest

Achieving a high SERP (search enging results page) ranking for your target keywords and websites, and even better still, holding on to those high rankings for a long time, is what understanding and utilizing good SEO copywriting is all about. Instead of dabbling with the black hat methods and trying to trick the search engines, it always pays to be direct and honest in your approach and give your visitor and the search engines what they want. This article will cover some tips to get you started with your own SEO copywriting endeavors and help you succeed.

People Write The Best Copy

As silly as it sounds, the best copy is always writen by people (as opposed to automated spinning tools – see below). SEO copywriting specialists can be easily and cheaply sourced from outsourcing websites such as www.elance.com and www.odesk.com. Prices for a high quality article, 500-600 words, optimized for your keywords start at a very reasonable price of about $5 and up per article, and for a little more you can even get a spun version of your copy. This can be a very useful method when you are just starting out and have no idea what to write, or how to write it. As you gain experience and see what copy converts and what doesn’t, you can then mimic the copy that converts and start writing your own killer copy.

Rise Of The Machines

We strongly suggest that you avoid strategies that use fully automated content spinning. No matter how good thay claim to be, they can still not produce natural reading content, and your readers will notice straight away. However, there are a couple of quite good tools that assist in automating the spinning process (as opposed to auto spinning). These tools allow the user to input an original article, and then using either an inbuilt or custom thesauraus, the user can select synonyms word-by-word or phrase-by-phrase, thus generating multiple copies of the same article, which is known as “spinning”.

Not So Dense

As the search engines crawl the web, looking for new content to index, they use an algorithm to determine what your content is, and how to categorize it. A part of this process looks at your keywords, how often they appear, where they appear and how that relates to other content on your site. One of the key criteria is keyword density, that is, how often your keywords appear in the article. A good rule of thumb for a 500 – 600 word article is to have your keywords appear between 0.5% – 1.5%, or approximately once per paragraph. Too low a keyword density and the search engines won’t rate your content as relevant. Too high a keyword density and you risk raising a red flag and being thrown in the sandbox for being a spammer. Get it just right and you can expect to see your content indexed on the first page of the search engines, resulting in a steady flow of more free traffic.

Another criteria is where your keywords are. In order for your content to be considered relevant (and thus rank well) your keywords must appear in your page title, your heading (H1 tags), and in the first couple of sentences of the first paragraph. It can also help to have your keywords in your paragraph titles (H2, H3, H4 tags).

It is a simple set of criteria that makes it easy for the search engines to know what your content is about, to see that it is relevant and well organized, and that your readers find engaging. Take the time to get it right and both you and your (many new) readers will appreciate it.

Happy SEO copywriting.
